Helping a parent, spouse, or friend with Medicare
You can help someone organize information and prepare questions while keeping their wishes at the center of the conversation. Start with what they want help understanding and how they want you involved.
MEDICARE QUESTIONS
Ask Grace a question
Grace is Community Wellness’s automated assistant. Get an explanation of Medicare terms or help preparing questions for Medicare, your plan, or a SHIP counselor. Grace does not choose a plan for you or enroll you in coverage.
Calls may be recorded. Privacy policy.
Agree on the help they want
Ask before making calls, sharing information, or changing coverage on someone else’s behalf. Medicare, plans, and other agencies may require permission or an authorized representative before discussing an account. Ask the organization what it needs.
- ‘Would you like me to help read the letter or write down your questions?’
- ‘Which doctors, medicines, or costs matter most to you?’
- ‘Would you like us to call Medicare or a SHIP counselor together?’
- ‘How would you like to keep the notes from that conversation?’
A checklist to work through together
- Read notices together. Note the plan name, coverage year, and any dates or instructions.
- Make a list of medicines, pharmacies, doctors, and hospitals for your own use.
- Confirm important coverage details with the plan and providers.
- Compare costs and coverage choices without assuming one type of plan suits everyone.
- Ask about cost assistance if paying for coverage or medicines is difficult.
- Confirm any enrollment steps and effective dates with Medicare or the plan. Keep the confirmations.
Use Grace for general questions
You can ask Grace to explain a term or help prepare questions without sharing the person’s Medicare number or other private identifiers. For account-specific answers or decisions, contact Medicare, the plan, or a SHIP counselor.
These guides do not create a shared family record, contact your relative, or send a summary to another person. Keep personal notes somewhere you and the person you are helping agree is appropriate.
If you also provide day-to-day care
Caregiver support can include respite, training, local services, and in some circumstances payment programs. Eligibility and available help vary. The caregiver guide explains where to begin without promising payment.
